Earth Through the Cockpit ver. 2.0

Ulyanovsk is said to be the aviation capital of Russia, being a home for the aircraft plant, aerocomposite plant, pilot school, one of the biggest civil aviation museums and many companies working in aicraft industry. Summer School at Ulyanovsk State Technical University is both intensive educational and cultural immersion.

Educational program includes study of: avionics basics, designing and operation of modern airborne information systems, aviation standards, avionics systems design concepts, architecture, structure and functional solutions, on-board interfaces, designing automation, verification, diagnostics and reliability engineering of modern airborne information systems work with modern CAD systems, etc. Practical classes in model oriented avionics display design are held on the base of modern CAD-system software SCADE Suite and SCADE Display in cooperation with our academic partner - French company ESTEREL Technologies/ANSYS (http://www.esterel-technologies.com/). School is supervised by the university professors who are practicing specialists in the relevant area. During the course students get a chance to reveal their creativity and work on their own small project. This year we plan to improve the school and to expand students experience in onboard programming by involving hardware equipment. Using these equipment students have a chance to test the software they’ve developed and to see the real results and application. Traditionally the course also includes practical training in a professional pilot training center at the Pilot Institute of Ulyanovsk, where students have a chance to see how the software is used inside the plain, to and to try themselves and a pilot. This year students will also have an opportunity to become a part of the Museum of Civil Aviation team (the biggest museum of civil aviation in Russia) and after an introduction to civil engineering history to participate in a plant renovation project! Visits to CJSC Aviastar-SP (an aircraft factory which manufactures the cargo and passenger aircrafts AN-124 Ruslan, IL-476 and TU-204) and other industrial objects will demonstrate the real work.

School course includes short Russian language course. Participants with different levels of Russian are welcomed. Entry Russian course and advanced course are provided.

Upon completion students receive a certificate, indicating the number of academic hours and credit points recommended, as well as study materials.

This program was implemented in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016.

Entertaining part of the program combines sports activities, workshops, cultural museums, out-of-town guided tour, bicycle ride, picnic, open air movie theater and the annual air show of Russian Air Fleet Day.

Participants of the Summer school are accommodated in a student dormitory on campus within walking distance from educational buildings. Apartments (for three or four) are fully furnished with shared facilities: equipped kitchen and a bathroom. Football stadium and gym are also available for students on campus.

During the School participants will be accompanied by student tutors and volunteers. It is recommended for students to form groups when arriving to Russia so the university specialist could meet them in Moscow and follow to Ulyanovsk (if applicable).
